The transformation from ‘Apartment’ to ‘Bungalow’ is centered around two significant devices, and amplified through the use of a primary ‘Building Material’.

A self-supporting brick wall extends through the length of the communal spaces, informally binding movement and program. The wall adapts to physical and notional conditions; it bends, undulates, perforates and is punctured to accommodate apertures, alcoves, deep service spaces, shafts and structure. As form and material, it exists as an appropriated cultural fragment linked to extant building traditions.

The primary west-facing communal spaces are organised within three structural bays - formal living, informal living and formal dining, with a 7-feet-wide balcony running along the western edge. The glazing line separating interior space from the shaded balcony has been shifted significantly towards the interior in the central bay (informal living) to form a ‘Courtyard’. A simple gesture has effectively altered the anatomy of the space to encourage indoor/outdoor living. This archetypal ‘linear balcony’ becomes a deep-shaded courtyard.
