About
We are a Mumbai-based, award-winning, multidisciplinary, design practice with over 48 years of experience. From its inception, our practice has attempted to develop a contemporary design syntax for the Indian subcontinent, by approaching architecture as a synthesis of ‘Ecology’ and ‘Spirit’.
Ecology implies a seamless, cohesive and holistic approach to design. This is achieved through the assembly of a group of highly motivated and evolved specialists in different disciplines. We believe in creating lasting relationships that become so deeply intertwined, that the whole ceases to be a sum of its parts, and instead becomes a living, breathing organism in itself.
Luis Barragan once said "Architecture is the spatial execution of spiritual decisions." Deriving from that, Spirit implies balance, understanding and tranquility. Our work draws inspiration from nature, not through only its physical forms, but through its principles and processes.
We also try to resurrect the Indian artisan, as well as cultivate the use of local materials as a corollary to encouraging sustainability. This is exemplified by our works that incorporate load bearing brick masonry, stone masonry, exposed concrete and most recently, the innovative use of structural steel.

Team
At Malik Architecture, we honor the core values of empowerment, trust, adaptability, knowledge-sharing, transparency and work-life balance as they hold the key to a healthy, balanced and stimulating environment. We celebrate diversity in background, thought, skill sets and approach and uphold collaboration and curiosity. Supporting the personal and professional growth of each individual on the team is very important to us because we know that happy people make wonderfully productive people! To achieve this, we focus on team building activities within and outside the studio, use regular feedback to customize programs that enhance skill sets as well as facilitate knowledge sharing by way of inviting visiting faculty and practitioners and encourage attendance of workshops, webinars and conferences. We continue to invest in tangible ways to enhance the quality of the team’s experience in the office including provision of technological and other tools to promote creativity and efficiency. Our team is our treasure and we continue to keep our ear close to the ground to ensure that we stay nimble, responsive and mindful of their needs and work closely to achieve individual and collective goals.

Kamal Malik
Founder and Director, Kamal Malik, was born and raised in Shimla in the pristine environs of the Himalayas; it is no surprise that, even today, nature remains the source of his inspiration. He completed his architectural studies at the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) in New Delhi. Over the last 46 years, Kamal has created some iconic and award-winning buildings from the Lupin laboratory and the American School of Bombay to the Stone House in Jodhpur, experimenting with materials, techniques and processes. Kamal is also a committed art collector, with a wide collection spanning antiques, sculpture, paintings and objects d'art.
Principle Architect
Arjun Malik
Arjun completed his Bachelors in Architecture at the Rachana Sansad Academy of Architecture, Mumbai and went on to receive a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University in New York. Before commencing his Masters in New York, Arjun worked at Malik Architecture for three years and returned to the practice in 2005. When he’s not brainstorming with the MA team at the studio, you can find him playing football at the Bombay Gymkhana with his team, or spending time with his beautiful wife Melinda and nine year-old son, Gautam.

Head of Administration
Amrita Malik
After graduating from Yale University, Amrita's inclination toward healthcare led to a promising career in NY-based healthcare systems including Mount Sinai Medical Center. Professional healthcare management in Mumbai lacked the rigour and autonomy that she enjoyed in the US so after a brief stint at an outpatient practice in Mumbai, she opted to oversee operations and administration at Malik Architecture. She currently divides her time between Malik Architecture and IFBE (Ice Factory Ballard Estate), the family's passion project where they are both designers and one-third stakeholders. What truly powers and energises Amrita though is the healing practice she was initiated into over a decade ago.
