About

We are a Mumbai-based, award-winning, multidisciplinary, design practice with over 48 years of experience. From its inception, our practice has attempted to develop a contemporary design syntax for the Indian subcontinent, by approaching architecture as a synthesis of ‘Ecology’ and ‘Spirit’.

Ecology implies a seamless, cohesive and holistic approach to design. This is achieved through the assembly of a group of highly motivated and evolved specialists in different disciplines. We believe in creating lasting relationships that become so deeply intertwined, that the whole ceases to be a sum of its parts, and instead becomes a living, breathing organism in itself.

Luis Barragan once said "Architecture is the spatial execution of spiritual decisions." Deriving from that, Spirit implies balance, understanding and tranquility. Our work draws inspiration from nature, not through only its physical forms, but through its principles and processes.

We also try to resurrect the Indian artisan, as well as cultivate the use of local materials as a corollary to encouraging sustainability. This is exemplified by our works that incorporate load bearing brick masonry, stone masonry, exposed concrete and most recently, the innovative use of structural steel.

We offer a comprehensive Design Consultancy inclusive of Architecture, Interior, Structure, MEP and Landscape Design services along with seamless execution and complete construction management of Turnkey Interiors ranging from residential, corporate, healthcare and hospitality sectors.

To achieve this, we focus on team building activities within and outside the studio, use regular feedback to customize programs that enhance skill sets as well as facilitate knowledge sharing by way of inviting visiting faculty and practitioners and encourage attendance of workshops, webinars and conferences. We continue to invest in tangible ways to enhance the quality of the team’s experience in the office including provision of technological and other tools to promote creativity and efficiency. Founder | Design Principal

Kamal Malik

Growing up in the pristine environs of Shimla, nestled in the Himalayas, instilled in Kamal Malik a deep and enduring reverence for nature—a force that remains his primary muse. After honing his craft at the School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi, Kamal has dedicated the last 49 years to a visionary architectural practice. He is renowned for his iconic, award-winning buildings and homes, characterized by a continuous exploration of materials, techniques, and processes. Parallel to his architectural work is a lifelong passion for art, evidenced by a thoughtful collection of antiques, sculpture, and paintings.

Design Principal

Arjun Malik

Arjun Malik represents the synthesis of a profound architectural legacy and global academic excellence. His design philosophy was forged at Malik Architecture, honed during three formative years at the practice, and expanded with a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University in New York. He returned to the practice in 2005 to guide its creative direction and mentor the next generation of architects.

As the Design Principal, Arjun Malik bridges the distinguished legacy of Malik Architecture with a forward-looking, global perspective. Personal Philosophy:
He is dedicated to creating spaces that are not only aesthetically compelling but also deeply connected to their cultural and environmental context. When not in the studio, Arjun finds balance and inspiration on the football field and with his family in Mumbai.

Director of Business Operations

Amrita Malik

Amrita brings a unique and rigorous operational discipline to the practice, with a background in healthcare management from Yale University and New York's Mount Sinai Medical Center. She applies this expertise to the complex ecosystem of an architectural studio, ensuring streamlined project delivery, strategic growth, and the highest standards of client service.

Amrita's purview extends beyond the studio to IFBE (Ice Factory Ballard Estate), a family-led passion project that transformed a historic ice factory into a vibrant cultural hub where the family are both designers and stakeholders. This dual role reflects the practice's core belief in the power of design to transform not just buildings, but communities.
