In Capture: Wageshwar Temple Restoration

Discreetly nestled beneath the waters of Pawna Lake, between the historic forts of Tungi, Lohgarh, and Tikona, lies the 14th-century Shiva Temple of Wageshwar. This ancient structure mysteriously emerges from the depths each summer, typically until May, as water levels recede due to the dam’s regulated discharge.

Upon its rediscovery, the temple was found in a fragmented state - its stone blocks scattered across the uneven terrain. This deterioration was primarily caused by the annual cycle of the lake’s filling and emptying, rendering the site unusable by local villagers and the temple priest.

Recognizing its historical and cultural significance, our team undertook the meticulous task of restoring the temple. We engaged skilled stone masons from Rajasthan to assist in the reconstruction. Each stone block was systematically identified and cataloged. Using photogrammetry and advanced 3D modeling software, we reassembled the temple as though piecing together a complex three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle.

The restoration process spanned approximately four months. Since its completion, the temple has demonstrated remarkable resilience, enduring the cyclical submersion and emergence without structural compromise. The restoration was carried out with great care - intricate, sensitive, and non-invasive - ensuring fidelity to traditional craftsmanship while honoring the sanctity and heritage of this ancient monument.
